At 240 grams, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is heavier than every iPhone before or since more than the 16 Pro Max at 227. Combine that with a 6.7-inch stainless steel body and a glass back, and grip matters more on this handset than on almost any other. A smooth case on a heavy phone is the combination most likely to end in a drop, so texture is worth paying attention to: matte, micro-frosted and silicone finishes all hold better in the hand than gloss.

The weight also argues for corner protection. More mass means more energy reaching the frame in a fall, which is why the airbag designs here are worth the few dollars over a plain shell.

Check the port before you buy a case

The 14 Pro Max and the 15 Pro Max are both 6.7 inches and look near identical, but the 14 Pro Max is the last Pro Max Apple built with a Lightning port. Turn the phone over and look at the bottom Lightning means 14 Pro Max, USB-C means 15 Pro Max. The case cutouts are different, and the camera arrays differ in size too. The 14 Plus is another 6.7-inch model, distinguishable by its dual camera against the Pro Max triple.

On a 240-gram phone, magnet strength is not a detail a weak hold will not keep this handset on a dashboard mount over a rough road. Choose the magnetic version rather than adding a stick-on ring later, since adhesive rings drift off-centre over time.
