iPhone 7 Cases

Four model names, one case size

The most useful thing to know when buying for an iPhone 7: the iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2nd generation and iPhone SE 3rd generation all share essentially the same 4.7-inch body. Same dimensions, single rear camera in the same position, home button, and the same button and port layout. A case cut for any one of them fits the others.

That widens your options well beyond this page. Check iPhone 8 cases and iPhone SE cases as well the SE listings in particular, since the SE 2020 and 2022 are far more recent phones and their stock tends to be newer than anything still labelled for a 2016 handset.

What will not fit

The 7 Plus is a different phone 5.5 inches with a dual camera, not interchangeable with this one despite the shared name. The iPhone 6 and 6s are also 4.7 inches but differ enough around the camera and edges that cases do not reliably cross. Check under Settings > General > About before ordering.

A listing that says "7 / 8 / SE" is reliable. One that stretches from the 6 through to the 8 is not.

No wireless charging and that is useful to know

This is the practical difference between the 7 and the 8, and it catches people out because the two are otherwise the same size. The iPhone 7 has an aluminium back. The 8 moved to glass specifically so it could charge wirelessly. Your 7 charges by cable only.

That actually gives you more freedom in choosing a case. You do not need one thin enough for a charging pad to reach through, so a thicker, more protective shell costs you nothing. The phone also has no magnets Apple added those with the iPhone 12 so if you want magnetic car mounting, choose a case with a ring moulded in or add a separate magnetic ring to a flat-backed case.

Check the port cutout

The iPhone 7 was the model that dropped the headphone jack, so charging and audio both run through the Lightning port. If you use an adapter, a splitter or any cable other than Apple's own, the shape of the port opening matters more here than on a phone with a separate jack. A deep or narrow cutout will stop a third-party connector seating properly, and it is worth checking the product photos before ordering particularly on thicker rugged cases, where the shell is deepest at the base.

What a case needs to do on a ten-year-old phone

The iPhone 7 launched in 2016 and a surprising number are still running. At this stage a case is keeping a working phone in service rather than preserving a new one, which favours the practical features over the decorative ones. A raised front lip is what keeps the glass off the ground in a face-down drop, and screen repair still costs more than most people want to spend on a handset this age. The aluminium back grips better than the glass models that followed, so texture is less critical here. Leather flip cases cover the display directly rather than relying on clearance, and at 4.7 inches the added bulk is barely noticeable wallet options start at $25 with three card slots, a coin compartment in the lining and a magnetic closure. The full range is in Hanman phone cases.
