iPhone XS Cases

Good news: iPhone X cases fit your XS

Almost every iPhone generation needs its own case, and most of this site is a warning about lookalikes that do not fit. The XS is the exception. The iPhone X and iPhone XS are dimensionally identical 143.6 by 70.9 by 7.7 millimetres, both of them with the same vertical dual camera in the same position and the same button and port placement.

They are the only genuinely interchangeable pair in the iPhone range. If you see a case you like on the iPhone X page, it will fit your XS, and the reverse holds too. That effectively doubles what is available to you, which matters on a handset this age.

What does not fit

Two models get confused with the XS and neither one crosses over. The XS Max is a different phone at 6.5 inches rather than 5.8 same generation, same name, completely different case. And the iPhone 11 Pro is also 5.8 inches, close enough in the hand to mistake, but it carries three lenses in a square housing instead of two in a vertical strip. An 11 Pro case on an XS leaves most of the back open and sits wrong.

Check under Settings > General > About if you are unsure, and treat X/XS listings as reliable but XS/XS Max listings as a red flag.

No MagSafe on this generation

Apple did not build magnets into iPhones until the 12, so the XS has none. Wireless charging works on a standard Qi pad, but the phone will not snap onto a magnetic charger, car mount or power bank by itself.

Two workarounds. A case with a magnet ring moulded into it gives the phone magnetic mounting the handset never had, and holds alignment reliably. Or add a separate magnetic ring to any flat-backed case you already own cheaper, though adhesive rings tend to drift off-centre with use.

What matters on an eight-year-old phone

The XS launched in 2018. At this point a case is not about keeping a new phone pristine; it is about keeping a working phone in service. Screen repair on an OLED Pro-tier handset still costs more than most people want to put into a phone this age, so the practical features earn their keep over the decorative ones.

A raised front lip is the single most useful thing a case can have it is what keeps the glass off the ground in a face-down drop. The stainless steel frame and glass back on this model are handsome and slippery in equal measure, so grip texture is worth having. And leather flip cases protect the display directly rather than relying on clearance, which is why they suit older phones well. Wallet options start at $25 with card slots, a coin compartment and a magnetic closure see the full range in Hanman phone cases.
