iPhone XR Cases

An iPhone 11 case will not fit your XR

Start here, because this is the most commonly made mistake on this model. The iPhone XR and iPhone 11 are almost impossible to tell apart. Both are 6.1 inches, both use an LCD display, both have an aluminium frame, the same notch and a Lightning port, and their dimensions differ by a fraction of a millimetre.

The difference is on the back and nobody checks it before buying. The XR has one camera lens. The iPhone 11 has two, in a square housing. An iPhone 11 case will slide onto an XR and fit the body perfectly, leaving a gaping second cutout where there is no lens and worse, an XR case on an 11 covers a working camera. Check under Settings > General > About before ordering, and treat any listing claiming to fit both as a warning sign.

The colour is the reason for a clear case

The XR was the colour iPhone of its generation yellow, coral, blue and red alongside black and white, in a glossy colour-matched glass back that nothing since has matched. A lot of people chose it specifically for that, and an opaque case throws it away.

If you want it visible, a clear case is the obvious pick, but check the construction. Untreated TPU yellows within a few months and faster under New Zealand sun, which shows badly over a bright back panel a yellowing case over a coral XR looks considerably worse than it would over a black phone. Look for anti-yellowing or anti-oxidation construction, and ideally a design with raised edges around the screen and camera so you are not trading protection for clarity.

No MagSafe on this generation

Apple did not build magnets into iPhones until the 12, so the XR has none. It charges wirelessly on a standard Qi pad, but it will not snap onto a magnetic charger, car mount or power bank on its own.

Two ways around it. A case with a magnet ring moulded into it gives the phone magnetic mounting the handset never had, and keeps alignment reliable. Or add a separate magnetic ring to any flat-backed case you already own cheaper, though adhesive rings drift off-centre over time.

Cases for a phone you plan to keep

The XR launched in 2018 and plenty are still in daily use. At this stage a case is about keeping a working phone working rather than keeping a new one pristine, and screen repair still costs more than most people want to put into a handset this age.

That favours the practical features. A raised front lip is what keeps the display off the ground in a face-down drop. The glossy glass back, while part of the appeal, is slippery, so grip texture earns its place. And leather wallet cases protect the screen with the cover itself rather than relying on clearance they start at $25 with card slots, a coin compartment in the lining and a magnetic closure. The full range is in Hanman phone cases.
